FAQ

THE BASICS

What is Kaapi?

Kaapi is the South Indian word for coffee — but it refers to so much more than a beverage. It's a centuries-old brewing tradition from South India, where bold, aromatic coffee is brewed through a traditional metal filter, served frothy and rich, and enjoyed as a daily ritual rather than an afterthought. Think of it as South Asia's answer to espresso culture — deeply intentional, intensely flavorful, and completely its own thing.

What makes KAAPI different from other coffee brands?

We source only specialty-grade coffee — the top tier of the global coffee supply, evaluated for quality at the farm level before it ever reaches a roaster. Our beans come from farms in Ethiopia, Colombia, Guatemala, Brazil, Bali, and beyond, selected for their character, not convenience. Every coffee is roasted fresh in small batches and shipped quickly, so what you receive hasn't been sitting in a warehouse waiting to be sold.

Is the coffee fresh-roasted?

Yes. Every coffee is roasted to order in small batches, and most orders ship the same day the coffee is roasted. We recommend letting your bag rest for 24-48 hours after it arrives before brewing — that brief window lets the coffee settle after roasting and brings out its full flavor.

Is KAAPI coffee caffeinated?

Yes. All of our coffees contain caffeine unless otherwise noted. Roast level affects flavor, not caffeine — so a light roast and a dark roast have similar caffeine levels, despite what you may have heard. If you want lower caffeine, our functional mushroom coffee or herbal teas are naturally caffeine-free options.

THE COFFEE

What blends do you carry?

Our blend lineup includes options for every palate. The 6-Bean Espresso Blend is our most popular — a dark espresso-style blend pulling from six origins around the world, made for fans of bold, full-bodied coffee. The Cowboy Blend is a medium-dark with cocoa, caramel, and vanilla character — smooth, approachable, and genuinely satisfying. The Breakfast Blend is a lighter everyday option that's clean, balanced, and built for mornings. And the Cold Brew Blend is crafted specifically for long-steep cold extraction, producing a naturally sweet, low-acid cup straight from the fridge.

Do you carry single-origin coffees?

Yes. Our single-origin lineup lets you taste exactly where a coffee comes from. The Ethiopia is a bright, fruit-forward offering that reflects the birthplace of coffee — floral notes, berry tones, and remarkable clarity. The Colombia is smooth and approachable with a clean finish — a great starting point for single-origin exploration. Both are available in 12oz bags and ship fresh-roasted.

What's the difference between a blend and a single origin?

A blend combines beans from multiple farms or regions to hit a consistent, repeatable flavor profile. It's the right choice when you want your coffee to taste the same every time. A single origin comes from one specific farm, region, or country, and the flavor reflects that terroir directly. Neither is better — they're just different experiences.

Do you offer flavored coffee?

Yes. Our French Vanilla is a customer favorite and a great entry point for those who love flavored coffee without the artificial aftertaste. It's made with real vanilla character and brews beautifully in a drip machine or pour-over.

Not sure which coffee to try first?

FUNCTIONAL COFFEE

What is your mushroom coffee?

Our Coffee with Mushrooms is a functional blend that combines specialty-grade coffee with adaptogenic mushroom extracts. It's designed for people who want the focus and energy of coffee with added functional benefits — without the jitters or hard crash that can come with straight espresso. It brews like regular coffee and tastes like one too, with an earthier, smoother character.

Do you carry instant coffee?

Yes. Our instant coffee is a convenient option for travel, the office, or those mornings when your brewing setup isn't available. It's made from real specialty-grade coffee — not the shelf-stable commodity stuff — and dissolves cleanly in hot or cold water.

TEA

Do you sell tea?

Yes — and we take the tea selection as seriously as the coffee. Our collection includes 11 varieties: Earl Grey, English Breakfast, Jasmine, Hojicha, Matcha, Masala Chai, Hibiscus Berry, Apple Cider Rooibos, Mango Treat, Peach Paradise, and Moroccan Mint. Each is chosen for flavor clarity and quality, not just category coverage.

What is ceremonial matcha and how do I brew it?

Ceremonial matcha is the highest grade of matcha, made from young shade-grown tea leaves ground into a fine powder. It has a smooth, vegetal flavor with natural sweetness and no bitterness when brewed correctly. To brew: sift 1-2 teaspoons into a bowl or mug, add 2oz of water just under boiling (around 175°F), and whisk briskly until frothy. Add more hot water or warm oat milk to taste. Do not steep matcha like loose-leaf tea — it's dissolved, not strained.

Is your Masala Chai authentic?

We take chai seriously. Masala Chai is one of South Asia's most beloved drinks — a spiced, milk-based tea with deep cultural roots. Brew it strong, add warm milk, and sweeten to taste for the real experience. It pairs beautifully with a morning Kaapi ritual if you're serving a mixed crowd.

Are teas available on subscription?

Yes — Subscribe & Save applies to tea just like coffee. Lock in 15% off and never run out of your favorite variety.

BREWING

Do I need special equipment to brew Kaapi?

Not at all. While a traditional South Indian metal filter gives you the most authentic experience, our beans work in a French press, pour-over, drip machine, AeroPress, or espresso setup. The 6-Bean and Cowboy blends pull especially well as espresso. The Breakfast Blend and Colombia shine in a pour-over or drip. Use what you have.

What grind size should I use?

Match your grind to your brew method:

Traditional South Indian filter: Fine (similar to espresso)

  Espresso machine: Fine-medium

  Pour-over: Medium-fine

  Drip machine: Medium

  AeroPress: Medium

  French press: Coarse

Cold brew: Extra coarse — steep 12-18 hours in cold water

How do I brew traditional filter kaapi?

Add fine-ground coffee to the upper compartment of a South Indian metal filter, press it down lightly, and pour near-boiling water over it. Let it drip slowly — 30 to 60 minutes for full extraction. Mix the decoction with warm milk to taste, then pour back and forth between the tumbler and cup to froth. Sweeten as you like. That's the ritual.

SHIPPING & ORDERS

Do you offer free shipping?

Yes — free shipping on all U.S. orders. No minimums, no fine print.

How long does delivery take?

Orders typically ship within 1-3 business days and arrive within 3-7 days. Because our coffee ships fresh-roasted, there's a brief roast-and-pack window before your order goes out — but it means what arrives is genuinely fresh.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently ship within the United States. International shipping is on our roadmap.

FRESHNESS & STORAGE

How fresh is the coffee?

Very. Our coffee is roasted in small batches specifically for outgoing orders — it's not sitting in a warehouse. For the best flavor, let it rest 24-48 hours after delivery before brewing, then enjoy within the window below.

How long does KAAPI coffee stay fresh?

Whole beans are best within 3-4 weeks of opening. Ground coffee is best within 1-2 weeks. Unopened bags stored properly can last several months — but once you open a bag of fresh-roasted coffee, the clock starts.

How should I store my coffee?

Airtight container, cool and dry, out of direct light. A pantry shelf is ideal. Avoid the fridge — moisture and temperature swings mute flavor. For best results, buy whole bean and grind just before brewing.
